Circles in the water
The Danish pavilion at Expo 2008
On June 14, 2007 Spektrum Architects was announced as winners of the project competition, and their design of the Danish pavilion “Circles in the water” leaves no doubt about how Denmark should be represented optimally at the EXPO 2008.
You find the Danish pavilion at the expositions main street, side by side with other EU countries.
When entering, you find yourself enclosed by darkness for a brief moment, to feel the contrast to the glaring sunlight and noise outside. This will lead your thoughts to an anticipated and relaxed state of mind.Inside the pavilion you can take a walk around the exhibition and enter the five cylinders hanging down from the ceiling.
The pavilion has five exhibition cylinders or “circles in the water”, each with its own unique experience and story of wind, water, biology, light and humans.
You enter the cylinders by bowing your head slightly down to get inside of them. Once inside, you get to feel the experience at close hand. In the cylinder of wind, you can feel the rush of wind in your hair, like standing in a field of windmills and get amazed by the enormous windmill wings in action. Likewise you will get intense experiences in the other cylinders.
When you exit the cylinder, you find on the outside of the cylinder wall, the story of the Danish technologies and values regarding sustainable development through usage of wind energy; A resource, you have just felt on your own body inside the cylinder.
In the largest cylinder, you find the pavilion shop and café. Here you can take a seat in the beautiful Danish design furniture, while you enjoy a lunch or a dinner, in the presence of partial Danish nature, such as fresh pine.
The balcony above the café allows you to get a glimpse of the VIP facility on the second floor, where Danish companies can hold events for up to 30 persons.
Along the inner wall of the cylinder you can take a glance at the exhibition of exclusive Danish design products, and be inspired to make your best souvenir purchases at the shop.
If you sit down on the long bench, which runs along the pavilion walls, you can feel the mild breeze that is in the air, and the light in the pavilion gives the sense of early morning haze. A visit again later in the day, lets you experience how the pavilions sentiment or “Danish weather” has changed to the finest overcast followed by a tender sun gleam, where the horizon is outlined between Deep Ocean and a cool sky.
On your way out of the pavilion, the dark passage reminds you once again of the contrast between the busy streets outside and the relaxed strolling inside.
